Benson

 Benson

2020-008

I was adopted on February 21/21

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB November 13, 2014
Located in GTA
Fenced yard required

Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

All about Benson

This handsome 6-year-old Newf arrived in our care on December 10 and settled into his foster home nicely.  He is a sweet and friendly fella' who has so much love to give. A typical Newf, he is pretty sure everyone he meets needs a good dose of drool on them and he happily obliges.

He came to us when changes in his owner's life made it difficult for Benson's needs to be met. He is well-mannered and will be a loving companion for the right family.

Benson's has a heart condition called Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib), a condition that can speed up his heart rate.   We've taken him to a cardiologist for a full workup to come up with an action plan.  At the moment his heart rate is normal and despite having this condition, his heart looks to be in good condition (size/shape).  The plan, for now, is to continue to monitor his heart rate, and if it starts to increase then he would be started on medication which he would then take for life. At this point, Benson does not require medication and his cardiologist does not expect him to have serious issues given how well he is doing.

A follow-up cardio consult is scheduled for 6 months from now -- his adoptive family would need to be willing to continue with monitoring his health and taking him to cardio visits.

Benson is a busy boy who likes to nose around and check out what is happening in his foster home.  He knows basic commands but is selective about following them sometimes! He will do best resting in a crate when not supervised to ensure that he doesn't get himself into trouble.  A home where he will not be left for long hours will be ideal for him--he loves the company of people.
Benson's owner reported that he enjoyed playing with some dogs, but could also have some issues with other dogs.  Sometimes he postures and puts his chin on backs and other behaviours that many dogs will not tolerate.  His foster family have noted that he has done well meeting dogs while out and about, but have noticed a bit of prey drive so a home without cats is best.  He is likely best suited to a home where he will be the only dog or with an easy going companion.

To be considered for adopting a dog through Newf Friends please submit a completed application, which can be found on the CONTACT US/FORMS page. Before completing an application or emailing us with questions, please review our FAQ page.  As outlined on our FAQ page, applicants who do not meet our adoption requirements (ie. no fenced play area, living in an apartment building, having young children, etc.) will not be considered -- please do not email us asking us to make an exception.

Ozzie

Ozzie

 2020-006

I've been adopted!

Quick Adoption Overview

DOB December 24, 2019
Located in Oakville, ON
Fenced yard required, NO exceptions!

Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

DUE TO COVID we are unable to place dogs outside of Ontario at this time.

All about Ozzie

This sweet boy arrived in our care on October 24 and is settling in nicely. He is playful, full of puppy energy, and made fast friends with the resident Newf at his foster home.  Ozzie could happily join a family with another very well socialized adult dog and will benefit from having a four-footed playmate.

This young fella has not received much in the way of training so we are starting with the basics with him-- housebreaking, crate training, and basic commands. His perfect forever family will have the time and energy to do all of the training that a young pup needs, but with a 10-month-old bouncing ball of energy.

Ozzie has not had many opportunities for socialization so it will be essential that his adopters have the time to get out and explore with Ozzie to help him learn all about how to be a well-mannered dog.

Ozzie lived with 2 cats previously and his owners report that he chased them. He would be best in a home without cats.

More information will be posted about Ozzie as we get to know him better.

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB October 13, 2019

DUE TO COVID WE ARE NOT PLACING DOGS INTO THE UNITED STATES AT THIS TIME

Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

All about Mary

This love-bug came to us through no fault of her own, when her loving owner's health declined.  Mary is a sweet, sassy, and lively girl who has loads of puppy energy and so much love to give.

Mary has nice house manners and knows her basic commands but needs some work to help control her enthusiasm.   She is a whirling dervish who is bubbling over with puppy energy!  Such a silly girl.  With training, structure, and socialization she will blossom into a wonderful companion.

An owner who has the time and energy to properly exercise Mary will be essential for her.  She has a lot of energy to burn!

She will do best with a family who will be committed to working on obedience and socialization with Mary to continue with her training.   She knows the basics but is easily distracted and excitable so has much work to do.  She's a typical hooligan adolescent and needs to learn manners!

She gets along well with other dogs and loves to romp and play.  A home with a well-mannered, playful, four-footed pal will be the best fit for Mary.  We are not considering homes where she would be the only dog.

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB March 17, 2013

Home with no other pets is best
Fenced yard required

Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

Due to the pandemic, we are unable to place dogs into the US at the moment.

All about Rosie

This sweet gal came to us through no fault of her own due to her owner's health.

She is a social gal who loves affection and will make an excellent companion for someone looking for a Newf who is out of their adolescent stage. She is very friendly and loves getting loads of attention.

Rosie hasn't met a toy she doesn't like and is a silly girl who will play tug and fetch happily with anyone who will play with her.

She is very fond of children and plays nicely with them so could join a family with kids.

She has nice house manners, knows basic commands and walks well on a leash.

She doesn't always love spending time with other dogs so would be happiest in a home where she will be the only dog.

Rosie is in good health.  She is a bit of a squirrel chaser and is quite agile when motivated!  Due to her squirrel chasing tendencies she is not suited to a home with a cat.

More info will be posted about Rosie as we get to know her.

All about Bear

Bear is a sweet and gentle boy who gets along well with everyone he meets.  He knows basic commands and has nice house manners.

He enjoys the company of other dogs and could happily join a home with another well-mannered dog. He is currently living with a small breed dog and a male Newf in his foster home and doing very well.

Bear, and his brother Bubba (who is in a foster to adopt placement) came to us through no fault of their own when their owner's financial situation changed due to Covid.

Bear is on medical hold pending treatment for bilateral cherry eye.  He is scheduled to see a veterinary opthalmologist in mid-September to address this issue. Updates to follow.

Caesar

Caesar
2020-001

I've been adopted!

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB October 11, 2012
Located in the Guelph, ON area
Fenced yard required

Before applying to adopt a dog or emailing us with questions, please read the dog's entire bio and review our FAQ page.  Emails asking questions that are answered on that page will not be responded to.

All about Caesar

This lovable boy arrived in our care on May 30th and has been a welcomed addition to his foster family.  He is a sweet, mild-mannered Newf who is gentle and affectionate.

Caesar gets along well with other dogs and has been a wonderful big brother to the Newf pup in his foster home.  He is gentle and plays calmly with his little buddy.

Friendly and social, Caesar loves to get loads of attention and loving.  He is a real gem!

Cesar's ideal home
Caesar could join a home with another mellow canine pal.

A home with few or no stairs is best for him.  An owner who enjoys getting out and walking will be the very best match for Caesar as he will need a lot of low impact exercises to drop his extra weight and continue to build muscle mass.

Health information
Caesar was on medical hold due to severe ear and skin infections but is now all healed up and feeling loads better.
Tipping the scales at 185 lbs on intake, Caesar was extremely overweight.   A weight loss regimen has begun to help him get healthy and improve his mobility.  He's lost over 10 lbs and is doing better every day. His ability to use stairs, get into vehicles, etc was greatly compromised due to arthritis exacerbated by his obesity, but with exercise and weight loss we have seen tremendous improvement.  He will always require medication to manage inflammation and discomfort from his arthritis, but with continued weight loss, he should continue to improve.

His bloodwork confirmed our suspicions that low thyroid may be contributing to his health issues, so we began thyroid medication.  Caesar is responding very well to treatment and his thyroid is now functioning properly.  He is feeling so much better!  His skin has cleared, he has lots of energy and is happy to get moving and go for walks to burn off those extra pounds.  He will remain on thyroid medication for the rest of his life.

He has a condition called dry eye, which requires daily eye drops to keep his eyes lubricated and comfortable.

Due to Caesar's ongoing medication needs our usual adoption donation has been waived.   Instead, we ask for a donation of the adopter's choice.

Due to the pandemic, we are unable to place dogs into the US at the moment.

Covid 19

Hello fellow Newf lovers

During these difficult and unpredictable times, we have many challenges to face. We are taking every measure necessary to ensure that we can continue to help Newfoundland Dogs in need in our province while keeping all of our volunteers safe.

To facilitate this we are taking the following steps.

1. NewfStock 2020 which was planned for September of this year has been cancelled.

We realize this will come as a huge disappointment to many of our supporters, but we are unable to hold planning sessions to organize the event. Further, with the unpredictability of how our province will be functioning come September, potential travel restrictions, and the devastating financial impact many of our volunteers and supporters are experiencing as a result of job interruption, we feel this is the best option.

If you have booked a room, please call the hotel to cancel. UPDATE: The hotel has said no need to call, they are automatically cancelling all bookings for the event. If you want to stay during that time anyway. just call them and ask them not to cancel

We will reschedule NewfStock for 2022. (The Newf Club of Canada will be holding its Speciality in Ontario in 2021 and we do not run NewfStock on years the Speciality is held in this province.)

2. Intake procedures
For the safety of our volunteers and surrendering families, our intake procedures will be adjusted. We will be assessing each situation on a case-by-case basis to assess quarantine status, risk, etc. and ensure the safety of all involved.

We ask that surrendering families transport their dog directly to one of our approved vet clinics at a pre-arranged time and hand the dog over there for vet assessment. One of our volunteers will pick the dog up from the vet clinic and will take the dog for a full bath upon intake.

All paperwork will be completed online, and hard copies left at the vet clinic by the surrendering family.

3. Adoptions
Adoption preference will be given to pre-approved adopters/previous adopters as we will not be able to conduct home visits at this time.

As this crisis is constantly evolving we will provide further updates as needed.

We are hoping that all of our volunteers, adopters, and supporters stay safe as we all weather this storm together.

Be well.
