Newfoundland Pups

Update December 6/17
Four pups have been cleared by the cardiologist and are adopted.

3 of the puppies (Iggy, Andie and Viola) have sadly been diagnosed with severe subaortic stenosis (SAS), as has their mom Carlie.  This disease could have been prevented had the breeder who bred Carlie performed a simple heart clearance on her before breeding her.

SAS is a genetic defect of the heart.  With this disease there is no way to tell how long they will live - could be weeks, months or years.  Some dogs lead long, happy lives, others die suddenly quite young.  The median life expectancy with medication is about 5 yrs.The 3 pups are available for adoption to special adopters who are willing to open their hearts to a dog who has SAS.  The pups are Viola, Andie and Iggy (see below).   Adopters need to be prepared for the costs associated with this disease, which will increase with time and the growth of the puppies. They will be starting Atenolol (a beta blocker) which will hopefully help reduce the potential clinical signs of SAS. These meds are dosed by weight and will cost approximately $50/month when they are fully grown.  Additional meds may be required down the road, with costs varying but potentially running up to $300/month.  They will also require echocardiograms and Cardiologist consults every 6 months to start with but these appointments could be more frequent as the disease progresses.

Special precautions need to be taken around treating infections, anaesthetics risk, etc.  And of course, the greatest challenge to raising a heart pup is preparing for the emotional journey of loving a pup who may not live a long life.  We are hoping to find wonderful loving homes where each of these pups can live their life, however long it may be, with great happiness.

Carlie and pups
A pregnant Newf named Carlie was surrendered to our program and her pups were born in our care.  We are told the sire of the litter was a Landseer  as well.

Born via c-section on Sept 24
The litter has been raised in an enriched indoor environment and the pups have been very well socialized with dogs of all sizes, with cats, and with people. Great care has been taken to expose these pups to a variety of different people and things to help ensure that they are confident and have a good foundation of experiences prior to adoption.  Preference will be given to families who have the time and experience to carry on with this work and properly train, socialize and care for their pup to ensure that it matures into a well mannered adult.

Adventure box to help expose the pups to unusual sights, textures and sounds

* Homes where there is another well socialized, well mannered adult dog will be our first choice as these pups will all benefit from growing up with another dog for companionship and as a role model. Homes without other pets will need to have a well thought out, solid plan in place for ongoing socialization.

Puppies require a large time commitment from owners;  families who have very busy schedules where the pup will be left alone all day are not a suitable match for a Newf pup.  No puppy wants to be in a cage for 8 hours!

Raising a puppy is hugely rewarding but takes much time and energy from all members of the family.  Newfs, in particular, are very slow maturing and can be quite rambunctious as puppies requiring a lot of training during the first 2 years of their life.  As such, families with young children under the age of 8 aren't suited; the only exception would be families who have EXTENSIVE giant breed experience and children over 6 yrs who are exceptionally dog savvy.  It's important that all family members are mature enough to play an active and consistent role in the training and raising of a puppy.   This criterion is in place based on having hundreds of Newfs surrendered to our rescue group over the years and consistently seeing the challenges that families raising a young dog with young children face, and the very high rate of surrender by families with young children.

These pups will be available to homes within a 5-hour drive of their foster location -- US adopters will not be considered due to vaccine requirements at the border.  We do NOT administer the rabies vaccine to pups under 6 months of age so these pups cannot cross the border.  This is for the health of the puppy.

The pups will be placed with a strictly enforced non-breeding contract and spay/neuter agreement.

The pups who do not have SAS will be placed with an adoption fee of $800 which includes a spay/neuter deposit which will be reimbursed if requested at the time of surgery once the pup is old enough.

The pups who have SAS will have their adoption fee waived.  We ask instead for a donation of their adopter's choice.  Non-breeding contracts will be in place.

Quick Adoption Overview
DOB August 14, 2010
Good with other dogs
Best suited to a cat free home
Located in Mississauga
Fenced yard required

Paige arrived in our care on October 28 and has settled into foster care easily.

She is proving herself to be a calm, friendly, well mannered girl  who gets along with everyone she meets and is a total love!  She is a goofy Newf who likes to play with toys and have lots of fun.  Such a cute girl!

Paige gets along well with other dogs so could join a family where she would have another well mannered canine pal.  She is pretty driven around cats so is better off in a home without kitties.

She is quite overweight so we will begin a regimen of healthy food and appropriate exercise.  Full blood work-up including thyroid panel has been completed and all is well.   Her vaccine s have been updated and she is spayed.  She has mild entropion in both eyes and is currently receiving eye drops for this. We are reevaluating in a couple weeks to determine if we need to surgically correct the entropion or if she can be left as is.

All about Comet
This love-bug is a new arrival in our program and is making himself right at home with his foster family.  He is sweet as can be, gets along with everyone he meets, and is going to make someone a wonderful companion.

Comet walks nicely on leash, is housebroken and is a mellow boy.  He is eager to please and enjoys spending time with his family.  A sensitive soul, he is loving and affectionate and responds well to a kind, gentle approach.  He just wants to be loved!

This fella' has been through a lot in his few years.  He was returned to his breeder in 2016 due to inability to meet his needs, and then was rehomed promptly to a new family.  This new family soon discovered that he was both heartworm and lyme positive and they kindly took care of his health needs over the last year getting him all fixed up.  He came to us through no fault of his own when his new owners found his needs were more than they could manage.  They made the loving decision to have him come to our program so that his perfect forever home could be found.

Comet has now been to the vet and his blood-work shows that he is free of heart-worm (yay) and that his levels from Lyme are still a bit elevated, but that further treatment is not needed at this time.  He will need to have a repeat Quant C6 test (simple blood-test) in the Spring (April) to ensure that his levels have dropped (we will pay for this test, and in the off chance that further meds are needed, we will cover those too, if it is performed at one of our vet friendly clinics.)

He is neutered and UTD on vaccines.

He tips the scales at 163 lbs and needs to drop about 30 lbs.  He has some minor back and right hip pain, but his mobility is good.  With weight loss and muscle build-up he should show great improvement.  At the moment his stamina is not great but every day he can walk a bit further and as the pounds melt off and he gets in shape he will improve by leaps and bounds.

This adorably sweet boy is ready to find his perfect forever home.  Maybe yours?

An adoption donation of $500 applies.

All About Carlie
This sweet and sensitive girl is a total love-bug who wants nothing more than to curl up with her family and be adored.  She is friendly and affectionate, loves to cuddle and will make a wonderful companion for the right family.

Carlie was surrendered to us when she was several weeks pregnant.  She has since had her pups and they are all weaned and moving off to their homes.  Carlie is now ready to find her perfect forever home.

Carlie has nice leash manners, is housebroken, knows a few commands, and is a wonderful, friendly, goofy girl.  This little darling is a PRO at counter cruising though, don't say we didn't warn you!

She gets along well with nicely mannered dogs, and loooooves to romp and play with them.  She's a goofball! We are looking for a home where she will have another gentle and friendly dog as a playmate.  Look at how much fun she's having with her foster sisters!

Carlie is also fine with cats, what a good girl!

Carlie is a bit of a country bumpkin and will be happiest in a home where she has a nice big fenced yard to play and relax in.  City life isn't her style.

On intake, we noted that she had a heart murmur.  Ultrasounds have confirmed the diagnosis of Subaortic Stenosis (SAS).  SAS is a genetic defect of the heart.  With this disease there is no way to tell how long Carlie will live.  Some dogs lead long, happy lives, others die suddenly quite young.  The median life expectancy with medication is about 5 yrs.

Carlie's adopters need to be prepared for the costs associated with this disease, which will increase with time. We have started her on Atenolol (a beta blocker) which will hopefully help reduce the potential clinical signs of SAS. These meds are dosed by weight and will cost approximately $50/month.  Additional meds may be required down the road, with costs varying but potentially running up to $300/month.  Carlie will also require echocardiograms and Cardiologist consults every 6 months to start with but these appointments could be more frequent as the disease progresses.

Special precautions need to be taken around treating infections, anaesthetics risk, etc.  And of course, the greatest challenge is preparing for the emotional journey of loving a dog who may not live a long life.  We are hoping to find a wonderful loving home where Carlie can live her life to the fullest, however long it may be, with great happiness.

Due to her health condition, our adoption fee is waived, we ask instead for a donation of her adopter's choice.

This litter of pups and their mom (Mocha the brown Newf listed here) were surrendered to us when the pups were 3 weeks old.  The sire of the litter is believed to be a Lab, but the surrendering owner could not say with total certainty; it is possible that the sire was a Newf.  We expect the pups to mature to be in the 100 lbs range.
